By Kevin Alan Lamb
The window is open the air conditioning unit in its place
One moment or another of intoxication wipes it all away
He always wakes slowly that next day
Not because he is tired
Rather he feels once more he has conspired
A plot to foil his best intentions
A willing exposure to chaos and disorder
Fire water to the soul
Fleeting efforts of the heart
Man versus himself in a game of cards
Why do I let my words slip away?
How can good times be measured with my memory erased?
The good-hearted come together when flooded in haze
Together they emerge from darkness to claim the sun’s rays
It will not be easy but in moments of transcendence they see what can be
Their lives are before them and it is their love that they invest in their lives
Their hope in their practical dreams
And their hand to a heart, willing to dance to the tune of a song they love
Terrified of the music ever dying
Believing in something enough to give it everything you’re capable of
Everyday we take steps
Some forward and some back
It is the moments in-between that we must keep track
It is in these moments we flood ourselves in that which we lack
A moment at a time we persist with the reflection in the mirror attack
Progress is our measure of not looking back
An authentic soul balancing love
One behind and one before
Perhaps if we can dance just a little bit more?
Until the music runs quiet
Until the candle burns to just a flicker
We can never know of these days to come
From such fates it is futile to run
So we live
We look for love to give
And when we give it we make but one wish
To be met with smiling eyes and a kiss
An ineffable moment I dearly miss
But will find again
Because days grow so tired, living and not loving
I didn’t sleep last night– but not for a moment did I question the man I am becoming.
