Fall, is that you at my door?

Lately fall has been knocking at my door. I’ve been curious when it would come once more. Summer and I had a good thing, we always do. I never seem to want to let it go, often I feel fall is but a transition to the snow. But I have realized as I always do, that the fall is much more than an unwanted knock at the door. Heavy clouds have hidden the sun, cooler winds blow, layering most everyone. Yesterday I pulled a hoodie over my dress shirt and slacks, a briefly forgotten comfort always ensured to help relax. Heavy rain clouds swirl amidst, falling asleep to a downpour- another thing I forgot I missed. The  air is chilled, without shivers to the bone, the wind blows, but just enough to be known. The morning commute seems to have changed- a little more bearable with the leaves colors recently rearranged. A change too subtle to see all at once, but like a child grows- once taken a step back- the transformation too grand to ever look back. It finds you when you allow yourself to see, beauty, simplicity, the fall is much like you and me. Foliage like face- wears it’s worn complexion, clinging to a branch like the diseased fighting an infection. Holding on- holding for life- just an instant more, falling to the Earth’s floor, gathered, collected- withered and torn. The time has passed, only momentarily remembered, without transition to burning flame they are rendered. On a fall day the scent of a leaf at departure carries for miles; down haunted trails, reaching rides made of hay, the delight of a single aroma salvaging somebodies day. The cider mill has opened, apple spice and sweet doughy delights, children and adults- enjoying equal play, a romantic ineffability- blanketed by a sky filled grey. Not often does a love poem read like this; on a cold and dreary day- with wind swirling every which way-  blanketed in layers of wool, sipping on coco of Swiss- my world began in an instant, at conception with a kiss, only a scarecrow to witness, cool rain to comply, an October romance unimagined- covered in leaves falling from the sky.
